by NEIL YOUNG
A wonderfull ballad by the old Young (though he was young
when he
wrote it). The lyrics are even tinged with the naïvety of the seventies. As soon as you hear the tune you get the Em7 and a D or D9. You feel that the 3rd chord turns around a Am7 but it never was satisfactory to me until the day when I played the mystery chord quite by chance when improvising on other songs. I called it Am7sus4 though I am not sure of the name. This is in fact the only reason of this web page,as I play the solo in a very simple way. I transcribed the whole with the bass.
You will get the rhythmic guitar easily ( 3 chords ! with variations at times: do not hesitate to play a natural D at times instead of a D9 and so on .. when you get tired of it just start singing !) The detailed tab of the rhythm guitar is here as an indication. Read it once and try to let your fingers do it themselves. To download the MP3 demo which I recorded with 2 guitars
and a bass

He came dancing across the water
With his galleons and guns,
Lookin' for the new world
And the palace in the sun
On the shore lay Montezuma
With his coca leaves and pearls
In his halls he often wandered
With the secrets of the worlds
And his subjects gathered round him
Like the leaves around the tree
In their clothes of many colors
For the angry gods to see
And the women all were beautiful
And the men stood straight and strong
They offered life in sacrifice
So that others could go on
Hate was just a legend
War was never known
People worked together
And they lifted many stones
And they carried them to the flatlands,
But they died along the way
And they built up with their bare hands
What we still can't do today
And I know she's living there
and she loves me to this day
I still can't remember when
Or how I lost my way
He came dancing across the water
