In 1963 that is in the days when Bob Dylan, as a folk singer, appeared as a genial inheritor of Woody Guthrie, he released his first album with his own compositions : "The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan" . Among these was this famous nostalgic song : Girl From the North Country . The North Country is probably his native Minnesota.

The fingerpicking sequence and patterns are more simple than those of Don't Think Twice It's All Right on the same album.  I wrote the tab from this version and from this video on Youtube  . On this video Dylan plays the song down the neck that is in the key of G.  The Freewheelin' version is in the key of Bb, so we simply use a capo on the third fret.  On the photograph on the right, Dylan uses a capo on the second fret probably playing the song half a tone lower as he did  on Freewheelin' ( that chord is the one you play when singing "If you're travelling ...")

This song was covered by many .  I recorded an audio demo with the intro and two verses , which are the same,  that you can listen to or download here :

You can watch a video demo on Youtube here :

If you're travelling in the North Country Fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the border line
Remember me to one who lives there
For she once was a true love of mine

If you go when the snow flakes storm
When the rivers freeze and summer ends
Please see if she wears a coat so warm
To keep hear from the howling winds

Please see for me if her hair's hanging long
If it rolls and flows all down her breast

Please see for me if her hair's hanging long
For that's the way I remember her best

I wonder if she remembers me at all
Many times I've often prayed
In the darkness of my night
In the brightness of my day

So if you're travelling in the North Country Fair
Where the winds hit heavy on the border line
Remember me to one who lives there
For she once was a true love of mine
